What are your thoughts on the dreamcast? A waste of time, money well spent, or just underpublicised

if it was not for the forum i would not have discovered the shenmue series.the dreamcast was ahead of its time.shame that only the japanese get new games now.i think the dreamcast still has some mileage left in it. i have a ps2 but i hate it.had most sega consoles.never ventured in to saturn though.

The Dreamcast had a far better selection of software than the PS2, just as the Saturn had a better selection than PS1. I include imports when making this statement, and I am talking quality, not quantity. Ever try to put together a list of 25 must-own PS1 or PS2 titles? I can't. If you like shooters (I don't mean Quake) add 25 points to the Saturn's long-term value rating. Sega had some truly original and addictive titles on both systems, but the public's willingness to let Sony tell them what they should like means that most gamers have missed some absolutely stellar Sega titles. I recommend the Genesis/Megadrive as well, if you have an interest in old-school fun and addictive gameplay. To those who prefer easy main games with lots of extras to earn by replaying the same sequences over and over, I would recommend a Sony system. The majority of the public seem to prefer the latter, which is their choice to make. I personally prefer the former; gameplay over graphics, and 2D fun over 3D tedium. Sega's Dreamcast releases showed them to be one of very few, or maybe the only, company capable of putting fun into a 3D games.

The system was of quality build.......don't know what happened, why it sunk....i believe if Sega released some of the games for it they talked about but never happened, the system may have made it. Games like Planet Harrier, Nights, and so on. BUT, by not releasing Shenmue 2 on the system, that was the final nail. The day I read that Shenmue2 was cxld for the Dreamcast was a very bad day. Other than ColecoVision, I have only owned Sega systems. And when Shenmue2 was cxld I gave up on sega. Well, at least for the most part.

Shenmue II was only axed in the US, we got it over here in the UK and so did Japan

I think that part of Dreamcast's downfall was poor advertisement.
